About the author
Sam Lyon
Following a seemingly calm but internally turbulent adolescence battling mental health struggles, Sam Lyon experienced a pivotal, life-changing moment at the age of 25 when she suddenly lost her father, prompting a profound and reflective realisation about how short and precious life really is.
A musician and songwriter by trade, Lyon was inspired to release a new album of 13 intricately orchestrated songs intimately delving into her mental health journey, which went on to gain both national and international success, appearing on TV, radio, and publications alike.
After receiving abundant praise from listeners all over the world who were also grappling with their own struggles and had discovered solace and reassurance in Sam's music, Lyon began a mental health podcast in 2022 entitled ‘The Calm Within The Storm’, inspired by one of the songs on her album about a close friend who also battled with their mental health from a young age. The podcast touched on a variety of different mental wellbeing topics including seeking professional help, stress and overworking, pregnancy and parenthood, the impact of social media, communicating with loved ones, navigating grief, using creativity as a means of coping, and more. In 2023, the series was picked up by one of the UK’s biggest news broadcasters, ITV News, and excerpts from the episodes were aired as part of their coverage on grief during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the chaotic midst of the album and podcast release, Lyon found monumental relief and comfort through gratitude journaling, mindfulness exercises, and practising creativity. Over the four year period since her dad’s passing, she slowly collated a list of the exercises that brought her the most joy and peace, and eventually her debut book, ‘What It Is To Know Colour’ was born.
